How to learn Tabla online as a beginner?

Learning, and playing Tabla all by yourself is not an easy task. In, Indian classical instruments, it is best to take tabla lessons from a live teacher, online or offline at your convenience. It is not a good idea to rely on free online resources. The best way is to learn under the traditional Guru Shishya Parampara, But if the student doesn't have much time to travel or can not join as per your time availability. Connecting with someone to learn via different video conferencing platforms is much appreciated. While starting, it might be hard as you need accurate information on where to start, what to do first, and where to find useful resources. Let me help you with that.

Where to start?

At first, you need to find yourself a good tabla. I don't suggest buying premium quality tablas as they cost a fortune. Visit a nearby shop and find a basic tabla set with good tonal quality. While purchasing the Tabla mention these details with the shop owner.

Tabla: (treble drum)

5.50-5.75 inch diametre

C# or D# tone

Dry Seasoned Wood

Bayan: (bass drum)

9.25 inches diameter

Steel/Copper/Brass Metal (brass is best among these)

[rest are the accessories which they provide with the tabla set - ring set, top covers, tuning hammer, pegs for bayan, soft tabla bag]

What to do first?

To begin with, try to learn basic tabla syllables which help you to make some rhythm. You can learn all the basic and advanced syllables at our "Tabla Bol Library". To start as a beginner please follow only the first 11 phrases.

While practicing the syllables call them by name as in the beginning you may get confused with them. So it is good to call the names to make a strong memory with them. If you can spare 45-60 Mins daily (or at least 5 days a week) for practice then you can see your improvement within a week.

The Next Step:

After, Practicing basic bols for at least 5-7 days start with some basic exercises like Example: Basic Kaydas, Rela, Tihai, Etc. You can easily catch up with easy and well-explained compositions in no time. With just a week of practice, you can prepare your first-ever basic Tabla lesson. We have added PDF notes for you as well to learn taal thekas of various taals. To start with just learn the taal thekas with Dadra, Roopak, Kehrwa, Jhap Taal, & Teen Taal. Now the most important thing is that you should not hurry. Try to focus on the accuracy of your composition and tonal quality. Tabla lessons should be practiced at least one week before moving ahead with the new one.
